Inspiration

History

Edelweiss Landscaping was established in April 1979. In the early years, Edelweiss provided lawn care and maintenance and limited plantings. As time passed, lawn care was dropped and Josef concentrated on planting, landscaping, and developing the nursery. The nursery was established in 1985 at the current location when the owners moved to the quiet residential neighborhood 10 minutes from Duluth, MN. Josef is a horticulturist who obtained his education and internship in Germany and moved to Duluth, Minnesota to establish a niche market for his unique style and and artistry with plant choices.

The nursery began as a holding nursery for landscaping projects and has developed into a very popular and well respected retail nursery. Duluth and surrounding area have two distinct growing zones as Lake Superior tempers the cold winters allowing zone 4 plants to thrive. Gardeners living away from the big lake, are finding success with zone 3 plantings. Josef over the years has tested many plant species that were not planted in the past to determine hardiness. Landscaping clients have been the test grounds. To name a few of surprise successes thriving in the area are elepidote rhododendrons, azaleas, numerous conifers, Magnolias, Chinese Dogwood, Japanese Maple - and the list goes on. Edelweiss offers a nice mix in the nursery- rare and unusual side by side with commonly used plant material. Thus, the appeal is for everyone from the novice to the experienced gardener and homeowner.

It is the hope of the owners to find someone to continue the Edelweiss tradition of offering quality unique and varied plant material and taking care of loyal nursery friends. The home and business are fully operational including trucks, large equipment, tools, inventory, and nursery stock. The buyers have the option of continuing with the landscaping service or operating as a retail nursery business only. In 2008, Edelweiss will operate as a retail nursery only.
